Hokkien Mee has its roots in the culinary traditions of Chinese immigrants from the Fujian province, who brought their noodle-making skills to Malaysia. Over time, this dish evolved into two distinct styles, each reflecting the local flavours and ingredients.
There are 2 styles of Hokkien Mee in Malaysia. KL Hokkien Mee is a stir-fried noodle dish known for its smoky, caramelized flavour, often referred to as âwok heiâ or the breath of the wok. Thick yellow noodles are stir-fried with pork, squid, prawns, cabbage, and crispy pork lard, all coated in a dark, savoury soy sauce.
Meanwhile, in Penang, Hokkien Mee is a prawn noodle soup with a rich, umami-packed broth made from prawn heads and shells. This comforting soup features yellow egg noodles and rice vermicelli, topped with prawns, pork slices, hard-boiled eggs, bean sprouts, and water spinach, garnished with fried shallots and spicy sambal chilli paste.
Here we go, this is the start of my Hokkien Mee adventure.
Tiong Hokkien Mee

What makes Tiong Hokkien Mee special for me is the nostalgic connection to my childhoodâI shared meals here with my grandma. It’s the first place to start this adventure. Until today it continues to deliver the comforting taste I remember fondly. The restaurant has a laid-back, casual vibe with plastic chairs and simple tables. The sounds of sizzling woks and casual chatter create an inviting atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to enjoy a local meal.
What to order
Hokkien Mee â Thick, chewy noodles.
Yin Yong â Combo of vermicelli & kway teow.
Fried Rice â A sleeper hit.
When it comes to their Hokkien Mee, the thick, chewy noodles are a highlight. The smoky, savoury aroma fills the air, while the caramelized dark soy sauce brings a depth of flavour. The crispy pork lard adds just the right crunch without overpowering the dish.

To complement my Hokkien Mee, I also tried their Wa Tan Hor, which balances the thick, rich flavours with smooth egg gravy, creating a delightful harmony.
Ambience
Street-side, noisy, and smoky. Plastic tables spill into the five-foot way.
Insider Tips
